For Immediate Release: FOOLS; A Comic Fable
Theatre in the Woods will open its 20th season of live theatre with the play “Fools” by playwright Neil Simon. This comic fable illustrates how the power of pure love overcomes a 200-year curse of stupidity placed on the remote village of Kulyenchikov. Within the story, Leon Tolchinsky, an ambitious young schoolteacher, discovers the love of his life in Sophia, whom he must educate within 24 hours. At the moment of crisis, he also discovers why the curse has worked and how he can break it.
Theatre in the Woods came into existence in the fall of 1990 with a production of “Fools” at the Palace Theater in Spooner. Ten years ago, “Fools” was the season opener in TITW’s new and permanent home, the Erika Quam Memorial Theater.
Cast members for the current production include Margaret Olsgard of Sarona as Lenya, whom she played in 1990, and Ron Carlson of Spooner as Count Gregor, whom he played in 2000. Other repeating cast members in differing roles are Del Bakkum and Leon Hansen of Spooner. Jessica Fox of Rice Lake plays Yenchna the vendor. Twenty years ago as a preteen, she created props for the production. New to this play, but with TITW since its second production in 1991, is Roger Sweeney of Shell Lake in the role of Snetsky, the sheep loser. Rounding out the cast are Bob Conners as Magistrate, Nick Baumgart of Shell Lake as Slovitch the butcher, and Corey Peck and Lane Hansen of Spooner as Leon and Sophia.
Performances are Thursday-Saturday, October 8,9,10 at 7:30 and again on Saturday, October 17 at 7:30 and Sunday, October 18 at 2:00 at the Erika Quam Memorial Theater at 605 1st. Street, Shell Lake. Admission is $10, with a student and senior special of $8.00 on Thursday and Sunday. Reservations may be made by calling the theater at 468-4387.
